Counting the Cost

One by one,

I scan the returned items.

Scrapbooks

Comics

Roger Hangreave’s “Mr. Perfect”

Chinese literature books

Pyjamas

Pasta bowls

Gifts to you, memories for me.

Holding back tears, I put on a brave face.

For myself or for you?

Tallying,

8 pounds

Calculating,

An Amex card

Forever an exchange.

Counting the cost was your heart’s burden.

One by one,

I toss them in the bin.

Whatever remains shatters.

I gather the pieces, hoping one day I will have the courage to love again.
