Behind the Lens

I took notice of irregularities in my environment in order to truly observe every detail in my subjects. By choosing uncommon subjects, it forced me to notice the lines, curves and bends that collectively reveal their realness. What I found was a surprising quality in scars, cracks, fractures and other imperfections. Umberto Eco, the author of the book “On Ugliness” said “Beauty is in some ways boring. A beautiful object always follows certain rules. Ugliness is unpredictable. Beauty is finite. Ugliness is infinite.” There is something unique about the uncommon or obscure. What others may view as deviations from the norm, I found original and honest. I also dedicated an area of my portfolio to recording my internal observations. Perhaps only when we see and recognize our own and others’ scars, can we better support people through their journey.
